A long post..Read at your own will..

It's a song I've been hearing for a while..The song have always made me feel sad & melancholic regardless of current going-ons in my life, due to it's tune, melody & parts of the lyrics which I could catch while listening (mainly the chorus)..It is only a day or two ago that I realised how much of the song had actually some references to some things going on in my life right now (as far as my own interpretations of the song goes)..

Him - The Funeral of Hearts

Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you.

She was the sun,
Shining upon,
The tomb of your hopes, and dreams so frail.
He was the moon,
Painting you,
With its glow so vulnerable and pale.

Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you.

She was the wind,
Carrying in,
All the troubles and fears, here for years, tried to forget.
He was the fire,
Restless and wild,
And you were like a moth to that flame.

The funeral of hearts.

The heretic seal beyond divine,
A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind,
The last rites for souls on fire,
Three little words and a question why.

Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you.

The funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood,
On flowers of evil in bloom.

INTERPRETATIONS

Here are some interesting reads of interpretations which I incidentally found online while looking for the lyrics..

These interpretations are what I could agree on & relate based on the on-goings of my life right now..The bolded & italised are what I could relate & agree more on, and the ones bolded, italised & underlined are what I could relate & agree the most on..

(Skip this part if you want..Just read on the bolded/italised/underlined ones..)

FOH is about that all things come to and end - but that their ending should be celebrated, not mourned.
-indescribablegina

this song well means that love (love between ppl) is what kills relationships. it makes no sense but ville is saying how you shouldn't get too involved with someone because if u do, when it ends ur gonna feel like u've just been killed. verse 1 is saying how the girl will be the one trying to make everything work and the man is gonna get hurt emotionaly. verse 2 the girl is solving the problem that would lead 2 a breakup (troubles and fears) and the man doesn't really care.
-Sweet666

"she was the sun shining upon the tomb of your hopes and dreams" is implying to me that 'he' has had his hopes and dreams killed before and that 'she' is about to make it happen again, "she was the wind, carrying in all the troubles and fears you for years tried to forget" is implying he had tried to forget the troubles and fears associated with being in love, but she brought it all back. love is the funeral of hearts, because love usually ends up with a broken heart. it's yet another HIM song about the futility of life/love. love can quite often be a gun separating two people, think romeo and juliet.
-riven

"Love's the funeral of hearts," Love's always going to break your heart.. no matter how long you ago your heart was broken.. no matter how happy you think you are... it will always somehow separate you and remind you of a broken heart... at least that's what it means to me....
-vol321

But anyway I think this song is just the end of a relationship and not wanting to continue looking for another lover because you know it will end in heatbreak just like the last one.
-Black Hat

To me the song sounds like he's singing about the one he loves leaving him for someone else, and how eventually love is the "Funeral Of Hearts".
-The_Lost_Truth

"She was the sun,
Shining upon,
The tomb of your hopes, and dreams so frail.
He was the moon,
Painting you,
With its glow so vulnerable and pale."

-The girl re-awakened the guy's hopes and dreams that had been broken before by a past love. The guy was the only light in the girl's life, so she made him into something a little better than he was, and it was hard for him to live up to her standards.... (?)

"She was the wind,
Carrying in,
All the troubles and fears, here for years, tried to forget.
He was the fire,
Restless and wild,
And you were like a moth to that flame."

-The guy had bad past experience with love, so the girl reminds him of all the bad things in the past relationship. The girl is just completely mesmerized by the guy and doesn't keep a straight head about things.

"The heretic seal beyond divine,
A prayer to a God who's deaf and blind,
The last rites for souls on fire,
Three little words and a question why."

-They end up having troubles and become depressed and pray to God, who doesn't listen to them or help them out.
They no longer understand why they love each other.

"Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you."

-All in all, a love like this is doomed and can't hold up for too long. It only hurts in the end. Eventually, "love" becomes the only thing that puts such a huge wedge between people who say they love each other and then have troubles like this, because once the romantic factor is gone, the relationship can no longer exist. If the words "I love you" had never been said, they probably would have gotten along fine. This is why "love is a gun separating me from you".
-Phoenixero

where he said that he thinks the song is a celebration to love. That he thinks funerals are supposed to be just that, celebrations to lifes passed.
So I don't think this is about a Bad realtionship at all. I think that with like "he was the mood, painting you with his glow so vulnerable and pale" and that stuff, he means more that all relationships has it flaws, and that even if they hurt you, you should remember like the beauty of the moonlight, the fire, the sun and the wind you know. The funeral is about remembering and honoring the times passed.
Love is about honouring and remembering the hearts, not only your own, but the person you were in love with.
-lapizlazulia

someone breakin ur heart then goin to someone else n then tryin to get back w/ u i guess.the funeral of hearts is someone dying of a broken heart n the lyric "she was the sun" refers to how special she was to him
-bittersweet666

This song is interesting in the way that it refers to him and her, usually it is me and you. I think this is how HIM can be really good though as there is an observance of how love can be in this world, i.e far from perfect.
-Lailseax

This song is about you don't want to love because you know its going to break your heart. But, you soon do fall in love. And that person gives you the Funeral of Hearts. ANd when that person finds out he was right, grabs a gun that "separating me from you".

She was the wind,
Carrying in,
All the troubles and fears, here for years, tried to forget.

This is about him falling in love again, and how she brings in all the feelings he tried to forget for years.
-That one HIM FAn

Great song, "three little words and a question, why?" probably my fav part, and I'm not sure why but I cant help but imagine someone saying his/her lover "I love you" those being the three little words of course, and the other person asking why? , like why do you love me? really sad but beautiful
-bittersweet_girl

In the song The Funeral of Hearts by H.I.M. there is a strong sense of Shakespearean influence. The song feels like it was written for Juliet, but there are some references to Romeo.
In line 2 an ode is an honor poem, but if it’s an ode to cruelty, it’s a contradictory statement. How can one honor something that is so horrible? In line 9, is an obvious reference to Romeo and Juliet, by way of the balcony scene when Romeo calls Juliet the sun, and the tomb is when Romeo is climbing down leaving to be exiled. In line 12 there is yet another obvious reference to Romeo and Juliet, this time through Juliet’s awaiting Night Soliloquy. These three paragraphs are so far really beautiful, heartfelt and mournful. The first two, lines 1-8 are used as the chorus throughout the rest of the song.
In the next set of lines (23-30) Juliet (she) took away all of Romeo’s troubles and fears that he had tried to forget, namely Rosaline. In line 25 Romeo (he) was fiery-tempered, underneath his whole loving exterior, like Tybalt. Line 26 begins with Juliet (you) being drawn to Romeo despite her use of wise judgment, and how she knew to take things slowly. In line 27 the heretic is Friar Lawrence, and the seal that is beyond divine, is marriage. The prayer to a god who is deaf and blind is how Friar Lawrence thought that the marriage would bring the two families together even though he really didn’t know how deep the feuding was. These lines are the most important in the song; it explains what happens when Romeo and Juliet meet, and how most of their own grief is ended by their marriage, but that their family's strife is not.
On line 29 the last rites are the funeral, while the souls on fire are the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The three little words are ‘I love you’ while the question is “why did we have to die?” These last two lines summarize the last two scenes in the play, the last rites their funerals, while they were still in love. I feel that these lyrics are so wanting, and mourning but still beautiful, and heart warming. To think of all that Romeo and Juliet went through just to be together, even if it was in heaven.

About how love can hurt and turn into the funeral of hearts in the end. This song tells about how someone can come into your life and change all your hopes and dreams, but you'll love them anyway, they can also cause you pain and hurt in the end though. I think this may be one of the messages in this song

OK, so here's my own version of the interpretations..It is based on the above bolded/italised/underlined interpretations & also with the current on-goings in my life..It's not exactly deciphered word by word nor need it be exact, and neither do I want to do that..Or whatever nonsense la..It's stems from my own experience(s) and stray thoughts of my constantly pondering & wondering mind..

Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you.

Love comes in a full package - anything & everything is inside, the beautiful, the ugly, the good and the bad. It is an emotion, a feeling, a something. Something that no one can fully explain or understand what it truly is. Explainable at times, yet remain unfathomable at most.

When love is beautiful, everything is perfect, rendering one to be blinded to the flaws and such.
When love is ugly, everything goes wrong, making one blinded to the goodness of it all.

Feelings and emotion, brought upon by love, could make one's soul comes alive and could also tear one's soul apart. Wishes and desires are natural effects of love, and when the fulfillment of those wishes and desires are not met, it brings about upsets and disappointments, thus setting off the struggles of the heart to stay alive. And as the situation degrades, it brings about the literal death of the hearts, the funeral of hearts, despite the entreaty of compassion.

As good as love is, it is also as cruel, as it needs to complete the philosophy of balance of life. Ode is for the goodness of love, even with the cruelty it creates impulsively. Love can bring two souls together as one, it can also separates the two souls apart.

She was the sun, shining upon, the tomb of your hopes, and dreams so frail.
He was the moon, painting you, with its glow so vulnerable and pale.

She, being the sun, shines bright and gives light to the darkened hallows of his hopes & dreams, struck dead & buried, by past loves broken of years gone by. She brought his haggard faith and beliefs, especially of love and goodness, back to life.

He, being the moon, lights up her darkness with his loving glow, envelops her with his trust and wishes. Being the sun, she desires making the moon shine just like her, so that they can shine in unison. Alas, the moon can only shine when the sun shines on him, thus rendering him powerless to fulfill her wishes, bringing about the vulnerability of his faded past in vivid clarity.

She was the wind, carrying in, all the troubles and fears, here for years, tried to forget.
He was the fire, restless and wild, and you were like a moth to that flame.

She, like the wind, carried troubles & fears that he had been trying to forget, those troubles & fears of past loves gone broken years by. Like the wind, she whip the harsh sand grains of heart pain, the sufferings, and the disappointment back into his heart, cutting the wound in his heart deeper. And like the wind, unpredictable she is, unknowingly gusting the gentle breeze into anxious tempest.

Him, like the fire, restless & wild, wanting to experience life, wanting freedom, wanting to experiment with the unknown vices of life & to go beyond the normality borders, having desires potential of breaking & tearing her heart apart. She, like the moth, despite knowing it all, despite the dangers of the heat, above all, despite having been scorched by the flickering flames, yet still naively aware flutters to the luring flame as much as she tries to stay away.

And like winds of change, she unknowingly blusters gentle gusts to the fire, thriving for a while to sooth the flames and coaxing it a directional change. Sadly, the gentle gusts give rise to the flames getting wilder & even more restless then before. Alas, the winds of regret settled upon her, as the fire resumes its flames of frustrations.

The funeral of hearts.

As with one of the interpretations I found online, I agree that all relationships has it flaws, and that even if they hurt you, you should remember it like the beauty of the moonlight, the fire, the sun and the wind you know. The funeral is about remembering and honoring the times passed. Love is about honoring and remembering the hearts, not only your own, but the person you were in love with, or are still in love with.

The heretic seal beyond divine,
A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind,
The last rites for souls on fire,
Three little words and a question why.

Sometimes, when one comes to realize how much a significant other means to them after the hurricane is over, they tend to hold on to the debris of what had once been. Sometimes, even making one’s heart shut close to love, of love that might be even more beautiful then it had once been. Then again, the reasons of why and how love can exist in one’s heart for another are often pondered about and mused of, without ever having concrete explanations solving the questions. Like the interpretations I found online, maybe love is about how someone can come into your life and change all your hopes and dreams, but you'll love them anyway, even though they can also cause you pain and hurt in the end.

Maybe the little why is best be left unanswered.

ps: Took a whole 24 hours to compile this post. Hahs.
